It's endlessly customizable. Use whatever Halloween candy you have, swap the colors, or add your own mix-ins. Have fun with it!

What Is Puppy Chow?

Puppy chow is a Midwest snack mix made of Chex cereal coated in melted chocolate and peanut butter, then tossed in powdered sugar. It got its name because it looks a little like dog food in a bowl. (Please don't actually feed it to your dog.)

It's also called muddy buddies, which is the name Chex uses on the box. Growing up outside Chicago, my house always had puppy chow.

This Halloween version uses white candy melts instead of chocolate and peanut butter, so the colorful cake mix and sprinkles really pop.

Ingredients

You only need a handful of ingredients for Halloween puppy chow, and most of them are already in your pantry.

Chex Cereal. Rice Chex is my pick. It's sturdy, it holds the coating well, and it's naturally gluten-free. Corn Chex works too, or you can mix both.

White Candy Melts. Candy melts melt smoothly and set firm, so they're easier to work with than white chocolate chips, which can get thick and clumpy in the microwave. I use Wilton bright white candy melts.

Powdered Sugar. This is the classic puppy chow coating. It soaks up any stickiness and gives every piece that snowy, sweet outside.

Halloween Funfetti Mix. This is the dry Pillsbury Funfetti Halloween cake mix, the one with Halloween sprinkles mixed right in. Shaken with the powdered sugar, it gives the whole batch a cake-batter flavor and little pops of color. See step 1 for a quick way to make it safe to eat.

Halloween Sprinkles. This is where the monster munch look comes from. I use a Halloween sprinkle mix with candy eyeballs and purple, green, and black sprinkles. Jimmies, nonpareils, or any Halloween blend with bats and pumpkins all work.

How to make Halloween Puppy Chow

  1. Heat-treat the cake mix. Spread the dry cake mix in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave in 30-second bursts, stirring each time, until it reaches 160°F on an instant-read thermometer (about 1 to 2 minutes total). Let it cool and break up any clumps with a fork.
  2. Measure the Chex cereal into a large bowl and set it aside.
  3. Melt the coating. Microwave the candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl at 50% power in 30-second bursts, stirring after each, until smooth.
  4. Coat the cereal. Pour the melted mixture over the cereal and gently fold with a silicone spatula until every piece is coated.
  5. Shake it up. Add the powdered sugar and cooled cake mix to a gallon zip-top bag. Add the coated cereal, seal the bag with a little air inside, and shake until everything is evenly coated. Work in two batches if your bag is small.
  6. Spread the puppy chow on a parchment-lined baking sheet and let it set for about 15 minutes.
  7. Add the fun stuff. Once the coating is set, toss in the sprinkles (and any candy you're adding). Serve in a big bowl or portion into treat bags.

Why I add the sprinkles last: If you add sprinkles or candy while the coating is still warm, they get sticky and the colors can bleed. Waiting until it's set keeps everything bright and crunchy.

Halloween puppy chow is easy to customize with whatever you have on hand. Here are my favorite swaps.

Substitutions and variations

White chocolate chips. You can swap white chocolate chips for the candy melts. Stir in 1 teaspoon of coconut oil or shortening as you melt them so they stay smooth.

Add Halloween candy. Candy corn, Halloween M&M's, Reese's Pieces, candy pumpkins, and chopped mini Kit Kats are all great mixed in. Add them once the coating has set so they stay crunchy and the colors don't bleed.

No cake mix. Skip the Funfetti mix and use 1 cup of powdered sugar total. You'll lose the cake batter flavor, but it's still classic puppy chow.

Gluten-free. Rice Chex and Corn Chex are gluten-free, but most cake mixes are not. Use a gluten-free cake mix or skip it, and check your candy labels.

Colored candy melts. Use orange, purple, or lime green candy melts in place of the white for a bolder look. You can also split the cereal in half and coat each half a different color.

Chocolate monster munch. Use milk or dark chocolate candy melts and skip the cake mix for a classic chocolate version, then add the Halloween sprinkles.

Add pretzels. Swap 2 cups of the cereal for mini pretzel twists for a sweet and salty mix.

Witch's brew. Add candy eyeballs, gummy worms, and purple sprinkles for a spooky, kid-friendly mix.

Storing leftover Halloween Puppy Chow

Store leftover puppy chow in an airtight container or zip-top bag at room temperature for up to 1 week. Keep it in a cool, dry spot so the coating doesn't get soft or sticky.

To freeze it, store it in a freezer bag for up to 2 months. Let it come to room temperature before serving. If it looks a little damp after thawing, toss it with an extra spoonful of powdered sugar.

To make it ahead for a party, make it up to 3 days before and store it airtight. Add the sprinkles (and any candy) the day you serve it so everything stays crunchy and the colors stay bright.
