An adorable no-bake Halloween dessert idea.
It’s so easy to whip together! Literally, whip. This is such a simple dessert and it is perfect for everyone.
You can make a big batch or individual cups. Don't want to put together these individual cups? You can use a cake pan/dish to make one big serving of it!
It’s perfect for Halloween. It isn't referenced as Graveyard pudding cake for no reason! It's so perfect for the Halloween season.
What is dirt cake made of?
Dirt pudding cups, or dirt pudding cake, are layers of a vanilla pudding and whipped cream mixture and crushed Oreos. It is so delicious!
Ingredients for Halloween aka graveyard dirt cake.
Oreos. The "dirt" is made of crushed Oreos, and you have to use Oreos! No other cookie will compare.
Butter. You can use unsalted or salted, whatever your preference is! I always use salted butter in my recipes. You'll want to make sure this is room temperature.
Cream Cheese. You should absolutely get a block of cream cheese as opposed to a container of it, you'll want to make sure this is at room temperature, too.
Powdered Sugar. Use whatever powdered sugar you prefer.
Cool Whip. Or any whipped topping that is a Cool Whip dupe. You'll want to make sure that it is fully defrosted before using it in this recipe.
Vanilla Pudding Mix. I like using vanilla, you could also use chocolate pudding mix, too! That could add to the spooky vibe.
Milk. Use whatever milk you prefer!
How to make Halloween dirt cake.
- Pull out your butter cream cheese ahead of time, you want to be sure those reach room temperature.
- In a mixer, whip together the butter, cream cheese, and powdered sugar.
- Take that mix and set aside. Separately, mix together your vanilla pudding mix and milk. Once the pudding starts to firm and become pudding, fold in the Cool Whip.
- Whip together the butter/cream cheese/powdered sugar mixture with the Cool Whip/pudding mixture.
- Set that aside and crush 1 package of Oreos. I suggest using the traditional Oreos.
- Begin to layer! I start with a little bit of Oreos, layer a spoonful or two of the vanilla pudding mixture, then continue on.
- Top with gummy worms, Halloween sprinkles, and any other candies you might want!
This recipe makes 10 - 12 cups, putting 5 layers (Oreo-pudding-Oreo-pudding-Oreo) in each cup.
How do you crush Oreos for “dirt”?
In a food processor. This is probably the easiest way, but if you don't have a food processor or don't feel like pulling it out of the cabinet, there's another way. Crush them in a ziplock bag. This is the route I went. I secured them in a plastic bag and then used a heavy kitchen utensil, like a mallet, and crushed them until they were the desired texture for "dirt."
Best way to serve Halloween oreo dirt dessert?
I like the idea of individual cups, it makes it far easier to distribute and serve. You could also make it in a large sheet cake pan and scoop it out onto plates when it comes time to serve!
Best way to store this dirt cake recipe?
The best way to store any leftovers would be in an airtight container. Alternatively, you can put aluminum foil over any cups that didn't get eaten and store that in the fridge. Dirt dessert keeps for 3-4 days in the fridge after you make it!
Could you make a Halloween dirt cake with chocolate pudding?
Absolutely! If you'd rather have chocolate, simply swap the vanilla pudding in the recipe below for chocolate in this Halloween dirt cake recipe.
