Tips for bringing snacks to the beach
Invest in a good cooler. This is the single most important tip on this entire list. A quality insulated cooler keeps your food cold and safe for hours, which means you can pack real food instead of just shelf-stable snacks.
Use ice packs instead of loose ice. Loose ice melts fast and leaves you with a soggy mess at the bottom of your cooler. Reusable ice packs keep things cold longer, so your food does not end up sitting in a pool of water. Stock up on reusable ice packs!
Pack everything in individual, airtight containers. Pre-portion your snacks into individual servings at home before you leave. It makes grabbing something at the beach so much easier, keeps things from getting squished, and means you are not opening and closing one giant container all day, letting the cold air out.
Bring a separate snack bag for non-perishables. Not everything needs to go in the cooler. Chips, crackers, nuts, granola bars, and shelf-stable snacks can live in a separate tote bag so your cooler is not overcrowded and can actually keep your cold items cold. A simple canvas tote or a small insulated bag works perfectly for this.
Pre-slice and prep everything at home. Do all of your chopping, slicing, and assembling before you leave the house. Cut your fruit, pre-portion your dips, slice your charcuterie. The beach is not the place for a cutting board situation. The more ready-to-eat everything is when you pack it, the easier and more enjoyable your beach day will be.
Pack a small cutting board and paper plates anyway. Even with all your pre-prepping done at home, having a small, lightweight cutting board and a stack of paper plates on hand is always a good call. They take up almost no space, and you will be grateful you have them when you want to lay out a little snack spread on your towel.
Freeze your water bottles and drinks overnight. Instead of just throwing ice packs in your cooler, freeze some of your water bottles the night before. They act as extra ice packs, and as the day goes on, they slowly melt into the most refreshing ice-cold water you have ever had. It is the best beach hack, and it costs you nothing.
Keep dips in wide-mouth mason jars. Hummus, guacamole, salsa, and cream cheese dips. They all travel perfectly in wide-mouth mason jars with lids. They seal tightly, stack well in a cooler, and look adorable when you pull them out at the beach. Bonus: no extra containers to wash since you can dip straight from the jar.
Bring more than you think you need. Fresh air and time in the sun make everyone hungrier than usual. Pack more snacks than you think your group will eat. You will never regret having extra beach snacks. You will absolutely regret running out at 2pm.
