What is Caprese salad?
Caprese salad, or Insalata Caprese, is the traditional salad of the island of Capri, Italy. A traditional caprese salad combines fresh mozzarella cheese, basil, ripe tomatoes, good olive oil, and flaky sea salt. It's so refreshing, and one of my favorite appetizers or side salads.
Ingredients
Here are the key ingredients to make this delicious and simple recipe.
Burrata. Burrata can be found in most grocery stores, so don't worry about running around crazy trying to look for it! Fresh burrata cheese just takes your Caprese salad to the next level.
Tomatoes. You can use whatever tomatoes you'd like for this recipe. Cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, large heirloom tomatoes, if it's the summertime and you have those fresh summer tomatoes from the garden...? Game over, it's so good.
Fresh Basil. The fresh, fragrant basil adds the perfect, earthy yet savory flavor. You absolutely need to use fresh basil.
Extra Virgin Olive Oil. I highly recommend keeping high-quality olive oil in your cabinet for the best results. You can truly taste the difference.
Salt. Fresh flaky salt looks and tastes the best in this recipe. You can also use kosher salt, which you may already have in your kitchen. You only need a little bit!
Balsamic Glaze. Topping this with a sweet balsamic glaze is the absolute perfect garnish.
Black Pepper. I add a little bit of freshly cracked black pepper on top for just a bit of spice.
What is in a burrata?
Burrata is one of the best Italian cheeses, in my opinion. A ball of burrata is a soft Italian cheese made from cow's milk. The outer shell is mozzarella and the inside is a combination of stracciatella and cream. It is such a creamy center and is seriously so good.
Variations
There are so many fun and delicious variations to this burrata salad. Here are a few you can try!
Fresh Ripe Peaches. You can put tomato bits along with delicious juicy tomatoes, or you can completely sub out the tomatoes and make it entirely peaches.
Strawberries. These are another great fruity addition to add, especially to make this the ultimate summer salad.
Mozzarella Balls. If you want to make this extra cheese and delicious, add some mozzarella balls or pearls.
Pesto. This is a super simple twist, just add a drizzle of pesto over the top for an extra basil flavor.
Red Onion. If you want a pungent addition, try adding some thinly sliced red onion.
Garlic. You can use fresh garlic or garlic powder. Personally, I love adding garlic and onion to my caprese salad recipes.
How to make burrata caprese
- Slice your tomatoes. I used grape tomatoes and sliced them into quarters. I find the smaller pieces easier to eat. Add them into a bowl.
- Add a generous drizzle of olive oil and a teaspoon salt. If you're using cherry or grape tomatoes, give it a stir.
- Add your sliced, fresh basil.
- Top with your ball of burrata, slice the burrata and enjoy!
How to eat burrata caprese
The best way to eat burrata caprese is with some crusty bread toasted with a bit of olive oil and garlic. You can always eat it with some plain, sea salt crackers, too.
Tips
- don't slice your burrata until you serve the salad. The creamy texture of the cheese makes it "time sensitive" so to be sure you serve the best quality salad, wait until you serve it to slice into the burrata.
