It's perfect for Halloween. The purple color paired with the name "black widow" is so fitting for Halloween! It's a spooky cocktail with a fruity and herbacious twist.

Ingredients

Blackberry Simple Syrup. If you don't feel like making this homemade blackberry simple syrup, I get it! You can always muddle fresh blackberries with simple syrup in the cocktail shaker before adding your other ingredients.

Rosemary. Not only do you need rosemary for a garnish, I love placing the martini glass upside down over smoking rosemary to give it that extra level of flavor. People are going to think you are some mixologist!

Lemon Juice. To help balance the flavors of this drink, I like adding a splash of fresh lemon juice.
Lemon Bitters.
I love keeping lemon bitters on my home bar cart, but if you don't have lemon bitters, you can always use a couple dashes of orange bitters instead.

Bourbon. I love making this with bourbon, but if you aren't a huge bourbon fan, I've included other liquors that I think would make great substitutes!

How to make the black widow smash

  1. Using a torch or unscented candle, carefully light a fresh sprig of rosemary until it's smoking.
  2. Place your martini glass over the smoking rosemary.
  3. In a cocktail shaker, combine your blackberry simple syrup, lemon juice, lemon bitters, and bourbon.
  4. Add fresh ice and shake vigorously.
  5. Turn your smoked martini glass right-side up, and strain your cocktail into the glass.
  6. Garnish, and enjoy!

Substitutions and variations

Blackberry Simple Syrup. You can always use fresh blackberries and ½ oz of simple syrup. Straining the cocktail might be more difficult since the blackberry pulp will get in the way, but it's still such an easy variation to make!

Bourbon. If you don't love bourbon, you can use vodka or tequila.

Fizz. If you like a little bit of fizz in your cocktails, you can top this drink with ginger beer, sparkling water, or even prosecco for an extra little kick.

Serve it warm! If you are looking for a perfect warming drink on a chilly night, you can absolutely make this warm! Into a mug, pour in 3-4 oz of warm water, and let the rosemary steep in the water for a few minutes. Remove the rosemary and stir in the rest of your ingredients.

Garnish ideas

  • Fresh Blackberries
  • Fresh Rosemary Sprig
