You'll love this salty dog cocktail
It's easy to make. Just 3 simple ingredients are all you need!
It's great for summer parties. Who doesn't love a crisp, refreshing classic cocktail recipe for summer? This is so easy to whip up for your summer parties on those gorgeous sunny days.
It's delicious. The combination of vodka and grapefruit juice is so delicious! Simple but hits the spot.
Ingredients
Vodka. Use a plain vodka for this recipe. I like using Tito's if I'm mixing vodka with fruit juice.
Grapefruit Juice. You can buy grapefruit juice from the store, but juicing grapefruits to get fresh juice is so much better! Plus, it's so easy to do if you have a citrus juicer. This salty dog recipe is so much better with fresh juice.
Salt. To have a classic salty dog cocktail, you need salt! I like putting salt on the rim of each glass when making these, but you could also add a pinch of salt to each cocktail, too. I recommend using coarse salt for the salted rim, it'll stick better and aesthetically look better.
What's the difference between a Greyhound cocktail and a Salty Dog cocktail recipe?
The difference is simple: the salt! A classic Greyhound cocktail is not made in a glass with a salty rim, whereas a salty dog is. Both cocktails are comprised of vodka and fresh grapefruit juice; the salty dog drink just has that savory salt element.
How to make a salty dog cocktail
- Using a grapefruit wedge, wet the rim of a highball glass.
- Dip the rim of the glass in salt and carefully fill with ice.
- To the glass, add 2 oz vodka and 4 oz grapefruit juice.
- Stir, garnish, and enjoy!
TIP: for fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice, I love this type of citrus juicer!
Substitutions and variations
Vodka. You can always sub vodka for gin or a blanco tequila.
Simple Syrup. If you like your cocktails a bit sweeter, you can always add in a splash of simple syrup or honey syrup. Honey syrup is just equal parts honey and water.
Club Soda. If you want to cut the grapefruit juice a bit, you can always add a splash of club soda to this cocktail!
Garnish ideas
- Grapefruit Slice
- Fresh herbs like basil, mint, or thyme.
How to make a big batch of this salty dog cocktail
This cocktail is so easy to put together for a crowd! I suggest putting salt-rimmed glasses out next to the pitcher.
- In a large pitcher, combine 2 cups of vodka and 4 cups of grapefruit juice.
- Cover and store in the fridge until you're ready to serve.
- Once ready to serve, add ice and serve alongside salt rimmed glasses and fresh ice.
- For each drink, pour 6 oz into each glass, garnish, and cheers!
