what is a moscow mule?
A traditional Moscow Mule served in a copper mug combines lime juice, mint leaves, ginger beer, and vodka. It's a classic cocktail and always hits the spots, plus it has some fun variations, like this blueberry Moscow mule!
why is a drink called a mule?
The name of a Moscow mule comes from the combination of vodka and ginger beer. Since vodka is often associated with Russian culture, that's where the "Moscow" comes from. The mule comes from the kick of flavor from the ginger beer.
Ingredients
Fresh Raspberries. I love using a small handful of raspberries for this recipe, but you can always use thawed frozen raspberries, too! Frozen fruit are frozen at peak ripeness, so you'll still get that delicious, sweet flavor.
Lime Juice. Just like the traditional Moscow mule, you need lime juice for this! I love pairing fresh citrus juice with raspberry cocktails. The zesty lime flavor with tart raspberries is just too good.
Mint Leaves. Again, this is a must in a Moscow mule cocktail! If you don't have fresh mint, I included some other fresh herbs below that you can use instead!
Vodka. Like the traditional Moscow mule cocktail, I use vodka in this raspberry Moscow mule. My favorite vodka to use is Absolut or Smirnoff.
Ginger Beer. I personally like diet ginger beer, but you can use regular ginger beer, too! The spicy ginger beer is the perfect offset to the sweet raspberries.
How to make this refreshing raspberry Moscow mule cocktail
- In a cocktail shaker, muddle together fresh raspberries, lime juice, and mint leaves.
- Add 2.5 oz of vodka, ice, and shake.
- Strain into a copper mule mug filled with ice cubes.
- Top with ginger beer, garnish, and enjoy!
do moscow mules have to be served in a copper mug?
First, the copper acts as an insulator ensuring your drink stays cold for as long as possible. Second, some people say that copper enhances the flavor of the cocktail's ingredients. The copper begins to oxidize when the vodka is poured in, making the flavors a bit more elevated. So, yes, a fancy copper mug is necessary!
