What's the difference between a key lime and a regular lime?
One of the biggest differences is the size of regular limes vs. key limes. Key limes are smaller and regular limes are larger. Once you slice into each of the limes, you'll find that key limes is more yellow in color, has thinner skins, and more seeds than a regular lime. For comparison, the average lime weighs about 3 ounces, whereas a key lime weighs about 1 ounce. So, 3 key limes typically make up 1 lime.
Can you substitute regular limes for key limes?
You can substitute regular limes for key limes. Sometimes key limes are hard to find in grocery stores, so if that is the case, you can absolutely use regular lime juice instead.
Ingredients
Key Lime Juice. Key limes could be difficult to find in the United States, so, if you can't find any, don't worry! You can still make this recipe with regular limes. That's why I included the measurements in ounces, rather than a number of lines. However, you absolutely need to use fresh lime juice. No fake lime juice!
Whipped Cream Vodka. This really adds the perfect amount of sweetness paired with Rumchata, the whipped cream vodka is an absolute must for this key lime pie shot recipe.
Rumchata. The Rumchata is necessary for a hint of creaminess to mimic this creamy dessert, but also the bit of cinnamon adds such a great flavor to the shot recipe.
Whipped Cream. I love topping these shots with whipped cream, I feel as though it's a necessity given each slice of key lime pie is topped with a big dollop of whipped cream or Cool Whip.
Graham Crackers. To add another layer of similarities between key lime pie and these shots, I highly recommend adding what I call the "graham cracker crust" aka a graham cracker rim.

It is so easy to make one of my favorite desserts into this delicious cocktail recipe.
- Break up ½ a graham cracker into fine crumbs on a plate.
- Get out 2 shooter glasses and using a lime, rim the shot glasses, and dip the rim of the shot glasses into your graham cracker crumbs. Set your shot glasses aside.
- In a cocktail shaker, add 2 oz whipped cream vodka, 1 oz Rumchata, and 1 oz key lime juice.
- Add ice and shake until shaker is frosted.
- Strain into your shot glasses, top with whipped cream, lime zest, and more graham cracker crumbs.
Can you make this into a key lime martini?
Absolutely! The recipe above makes 2 shots, but if you want to make this into a martini, I recommend using those measurements for 1 drink. Follow the instructions above, and rim your martini glass with graham cracker crumbs, shake up your ingredients, and strain it into your glass.
Can these shots be made ahead of time?
I would recommend not making these ahead of time, or if you really wanted to, you could mix together the key lime juice and whipped cream vodka. I avoid mixing anything creamy ahead of time.
