Ingredients
Now, this list is a tad bit longer than the traditional espresso martini ingredients, but I promise you it is so worth it! It's the perfect cocktail to get you into the holiday spirit.
Vodka. I use regular vodka for this recipe, as I do with my traditional espresso martini recipe.
Coffee Liqueur. I use Kahlua in this peppermint mocha espresso martini recipe, but you can use your preferred coffee liqueur such as Mr. Black or Luxardo.
Peppermint Schnapps. Instead of peppermint extract, I like to use a splash of peppermint schnapps.
Chocolate Liqueur. You'll need a splash of your favorite chocolate liqueur to get the mocha part of this peppermint mocha espresso martini.
Espresso. Naturally, for an espresso martini, you'll need a shot of espresso! If you don't have an espresso machine, there are other ways that you can make this cocktail! I've included some other options below.
Irish Cream. I always use Irish cream liqueur in my espresso martini recipe, and love using it in this one, too!
Chocolate Syrup. You'll need chocolate syrup or chocolate sauce for the rim of your martini glass! You may not think this step is necessary for your holiday cocktail, but it is!
Peppermint Candies. You can crush up candy canes, or you can buy crushed peppermint candy to have on hand all holiday season.
Making espresso for espresso martinis
To get that perfect frothy top, I recommend using fresh espresso! I find that it's given me the best results.
Nespresso. I have a Nespresso machine and use the mild roast espresso pods.
Moka Pot. You can also get a Moka Pot, which is a very inexpensive way to make homemade espresso.
Cold Brew Concentrate. You could also use cold brew concentrate if you don't have an espresso machine.
Any other espresso maker will also make the perfect espresso for this cocktail!
How to make a peppermint mocha espresso martini
- First, let's rim your martini glass.
- Pour some chocolate syrup onto a small plate, and then pour crushed candy canes onto a separate plate.
- Dip the martini glass into the chocolate syrup until the rim is covered.
- Gently dip into the crushed candy canes until the rim is covered in candy canes. Set in the fridge until you're ready for your martini glass.
- In a cocktail shaker, add your shot of espresso, vodka, peppermint schnapps, and chocolate liqueur.
- Add ice and shake vigorously.
- Strain into your crushed candy cane rim martini glass, garnish with three coffee beans, and enjoy!
Tip: if you are using hot espresso, be careful when mixing! I like to let the ice sit in the cocktail shaker for about 30 seconds to avoid having the drink explode while shaking it!
Substitutions and variations
Vodka. You can always infuse your vodka with candy canes and use 2 oz of peppermint vodka. Instead of 1 ½ oz vodka + ½ oz peppermint schnapps.
Decaf Espresso. If you are worried about the caffeine content in this Christmas espresso martini, you can use decaf espresso or decaf instant espresso.
Chocolate Liqueur. If you don't have chocolate liqueur, you could always substitute for ½ oz of chocolate syrup.
Irish Cream. If you don't have Irish cream, you can always use heavy cream instead!
