Ingredients
Fresh Raspberries. I opt to use fresh raspberries as opposed to raspberry syrup in this raspberry margarita recipe. You can always use frozen raspberries, too, but be sure you thaw them before you make this cocktail! I've included options below if you'd like to make a homemade raspberry syrup or a frozen raspberry margarita.
Lime Juice. Fresh lime juice is a must for any classic margarita recipe. I always recommend using fresh lime juice as opposed to any fake lime juice or jarred lime juice.
Light Agave Syrup. Light agave syrup is a must for margarita recipes! It is a sweetner that helps offsets the zesty lime juice and really elevates the sweetness of the fresh raspberries.
Triple Sec. Triple sec is an orange liqueur, it's more affordable than Cointreau or Grand Marnier, so I always recommend using Triple Sec. It's also a must for so many classic cocktail recipes, so I highly recommend always keeping this stocked on your bar cart!
Tequila Blanco. Blanco tequila, or white tequila, is what I always recommend making margaritas with! I explain more below, but essentially it isn't aged, so there isn't any barrel or aged flavor and it's a great canvas to build any margarita recipe.
Sparkling Water. Just for a little bit of fizz, so I add just a splash of sparkling water. You can omit this, or even add tonic water.
How to make this raspberry margarita recipe
- In your cocktail shaker, muddle your fresh raspberries and lime.
- Add in 2 oz. of tequila and ice.
- Shake until the cocktail shaker is frosted, and pour (do not strain) into a glass.
- Top with diet tonic water.
- Stir and enjoy!
How to add a salt rim to a margarita glass
It is so easy to add a salted rim to your favorite margarita cocktail recipes. Here's how to do it.
- Place a bit of salt on a plate, or anything with a flat surface.
- Wet the rim of the glass. There are a handful of ways to do this. You can simply use water, agave nectar, honey, or my personal favorite is using fresh lime juice.
- Dip the wet rim of the glass into the plate with the salt.
- Continue to move the glass around until the rim is properly salted.
- Make your margarita and enjoy!
What is the best tequila for a margarita?
I always recommend using Blanco tequila, or silver tequila, for margarita recipes. Blanco is not an aged tequila, like Reposado or Añejo, so it allows the flavors of your margarita to be the stars of the show.
You can use Reposado for margaritas, but you'll get that richer, aged taste. You'll notice that in these photos I used Reposado tequila, and it is delicious! Reposado tequila is aged for anywhere from two months to a year in oak barrels before being bottled. That's where the golden hue and the richer flavor come from.
Añejo is tequila aged for anywhere from one to three years and is truly made to be sipped on. So, I would recommend not making a margarita with Añejo tequila, and rather pour it over ice and enjoying it straight.

Substitutions and variations
Fresh Berries. If you want to use more than just raspberries, you can easily make this recipe with whatever berries are your favorite. You can make this into a berry margarita, a blackberry margarita, or a blueberry margarita.
Raspberry Simple Syrup. Bring equal parts water and granulated sugar to a boil. I recommend using 1 cup of water and 1 cup of sugar. Once it is boiling and the sugar is dissolved, remove from the heat and mix in 1 cup of fresh raspberries. Mash your raspberries and let it sit for 1 hour. After an hour, put the syrup through a fine mesh strainer. I recommend using 1 oz. of syrup in this raspberry margarita recipe.
Frozen Raspberry Margarita. Swap out fresh raspberries for frozen raspberries in this recipe and add a handful of ice cubes to a blender with the rest of your ingredients and you have yourself a frozen raspberry margarita.
Orange Juice. If you don't have triple sec, you can either omit the triple sec, or you can add in a splash of orange juice.
FAQs
Why do you put triple sec in margaritas?
Triple sec adds a bit of sweetness that offsets the tartness from the fresh lime juice and tequila.
What is the formula for a margarita?
If you're ever making a homemade margarita, remember the 3-2-1 method. 3 parts tequila, 2 parts triple sec, and 1 part lime juice.
