What is Passion Fruit?
Passion fruit is a sweet fruit that is native to South America. It has a jelly-like consistency with crunchy seeds. Passion fruit seeds are absolutely ok to eat, too! The seeds are actually a great source of fiber and the fruit as a whole is a great source of antioxidants.
Ingredients
Tequila. The best tequila for any margarita is Blanco tequila, otherwise known as silver tequila. Blanco tequila is unaged and it doesn't have much taste, making it the perfect margarita ingredient. Reposado tequila is fine, but it is an aged tequila so you get a bigger flavor profile including warm spice notes due to its aging in oak barrels. You can also use gold tequila if that's what you have, however, if you have Blanco, I recommend using that.
Passion Fruit Liqueur. Instead of passion fruit juice or passion fruit pulp, I like using passion fruit liqueur. It makes things much easier, plus I can't always find passion fruit at my grocery store. So, to be able to have this passionfruit margarita any time I want, I always keep a bottle of Passoa on my bar cart.
Orange Liqueur. I always include an orange liqueur in margarita recipes, one of the most popular ones you may recognize is Grand Marnier. If that is too expensive for you, you can use triple sec or fresh orange juice.
Lime. You need a bit of tartness to cut the sweetness of the passion fruit and orange liqueur and the fresh lime juice adds just that. Be sure to save a lime wheel for a garnish!
Light Agave. The light agave adds a different type of sweetness compared to the passionfruit liquor. Plus this is an ingredient in a classic margarita recipe, so I always like to include it!
Sparkling Water. I always like adding a splash of sparkling water to margaritas. This is completely optional, but I like the bit of fizz.
