Blackberries. I prefer using fresh blackberries, but you can use frozen, too! I would recommend thawing them a bit before making this simple blackberry syrup.
White Sugar. Granulated white sugar is typically used in most simple syrup recipes.
Water. Water is the base of any simple syrup!
How to make blackberry simple syrup
- Add 1 pint of blackberries, ¾ cup of sugar, and ¾ cup water in a small saucepan.
- Over medium heat, stir your mixture until the sugar dissolves.
- Reduce the heat to low and carefully smash the blackberries.
- Let your mixture simmer over low heat for 5 minutes.
- After all your blackberries are well smashed, turn off the heat and let it steep for 15 minutes.
- After 15 minutes, pour your mixture into a measuring cup through a fine mesh strainer.
- Allow your blackberry simple syrup to cool, and then pour it into an airtight container.
- Store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
Note: I recommend pouring the syrup into a measuring cup because the spout makes it so much easier to pour into an airtight container! An airtight container could be a mason jar or any glass jar with a lid.
Tip: If you really want to smash those blackberries, use a potato masher!
