It’s a well-balanced breakfast. I feel like a 90s cereal commercial or something when I say this, but it is! It's filled with nutrients from the banana, healthy carbs from the oatmeal, coffee to give you that burst of energy, protein from the peanut butter, and calcium from the almond milk.
It’s packed with nutrients to get your day started on the right foot. I love any super satisfying meal, like this coffee banana smoothie, not only for your tastebuds but for your body, too. It's delicious and it gives me the perfect amount of energy and fuel to start my morning routine.
Ingredients
With a few simple ingredients you can make this banana coffee smoothie recipe in no time! It's such a quick breakfast recipe to start your day.
Banana - I recommend using a frozen banana in this smoothie. Since it is the only fruit, if it's frozen it'll give you that creamy consistency. If you don't have a frozen banana, I recommend using a handful of ice.
Spinach - Spinach is so flavorless, I add it to everything I can and always add it to smoothies.
Oatmeal - I use rolled oats in all of my smoothies, steel-cut oats are just too pebble-like to make for decent smoothie use. And yes, you can put raw oats into your smoothie!
Coffee - If you don't have cold brew, be sure to let your freshly brewed coffee chill in the fridge for about 10-15 minutes before making your smoothie.
Almond Milk - This is my preferred milk, but you can use whatever milk you like to use or whatever milk you have in the fridge.
Tip: If you have ripe bananas, instead of throwing them away or making banana bread, I recommend peeling them, placing them in a plastic bag, and putting them in the freezer! That way you have frozen bananas for any smoothie recipe.

Substitutions and variations
Nut Butter. Use your favorite nut butter like almond butter, natural peanut butter, or sunflower butter for some extra flavor.
Protein Powder. If you want to turn this into a coffee protein smoothie, I recommend adding a scoop of vanilla or chocolate protein powder.
Chia Seeds. Chia seeds are a great source of healthy fats and fiber, helping you stay fuller for longer. I try adding chia seeds in anything I can.
Sweetener. If this smoothie isn't sweet enough for you, I recommend adding a quality maple syrup or a little honey.
Vanilla Extract. I love the addition of a little bit of vanilla extract for a little added flavor, I also love the combination of vanilla and coffee.
Type of Milk. You can use whatever milk you prefer: soy milk, coconut milk, cow's milk, cashew milk, or almond milk.
Tips for making the best coffee and banana smoothie
Cold Brew Coffee. I recommend using cold brew versus freshly brewed coffee. If you are using hot coffee, you have to give it time to chill and use lots of ice so you get that cold smoothie consistency.
Coffee Ice Cubes. You can take leftover coffee or espresso shots and pour them into an ice cube tray. Place in the freezer and use these in your delicious coffee banana smoothie.
How to thicken a smoothie
Did you add too much liquid to a smoothie? It's so easy to thicken a smoothie, here are some of my favorite ways.
- Add more frozen banana
- Add ice cubes
- Add more spinach
- Add dates, these ill also give you a little bit of natural sweetness on top of the banana.
Those three hacks will do the trick to get that perfect texture of the smoothie.
