It's easy to make. Don't be intimidated by egg whites in your cocktail! Egg white make for such a silky cocktail texture, and the flavor combination of lemon, grenadine, and gin are so refreshing.
It's perfect for Valentine's Day. Look at that pink color! This delicious cocktail is so perfect for Valentine's Day or Galentine's Day.
It's delicious. I love the combination of the tartness of the lemon juice paired with the sweetness of the grenadine.
Ingredients
Gin. I recommend using a dry gin in this cocktail recipe. I like Farmer's Gin, Hendricks, or Tanqueray.
Fresh Lemon Juice. Fresh lemon juice brings a delicious, bright and fresh flavor to the cocktail. If you don't have lemon juice, you can also use lime juice, too.
Grenadine. A traditional clover club cocktail does use raspberry syrup, but I like using grenadine in place of raspberry syrup. I feel like more people have grenadine already, or it's easier for them to find grenadine versus pre-bottled raspberry syrup.
Egg White. Egg White adds such a great velvety texture to your cocktail and a beautiful luscious foam on top that makes you feel like you're drinking at one of the best cocktail bars, but really you're just at home!
How to make a clover club with grenadine
- In a cocktail shaker, add in your gin, lemon juice, grenadine, and egg white.
- Dry shake (no ice) for 60 seconds.
- Add ice and wet shake again for 60 seconds.
- Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with 3 fresh raspberries.
TIP: double strain your cocktail using a fine strainer for the smoothest cocktail.
What is a dry shake?
A dry shake is shaking your cocktail in the cocktail shaker with no ice. This is typical for any cocktail recipes that contain egg white. Dry shaking helps breakdown the proteins in the egg whites to make for a super silky smooth and frothy texture.
Is drinking egg whites safe?
Yes! You just need to make sure you use pasturized eggs, which are the eggs we most commonly buy here in the US. On top of using pasturized eggs, the alcohol in the cocktail can inhibit bacterial growth.
The history of the clover club cocktail
The clover club drink originated in Philadelphia's Bellevue-Stratford Hotel and is named after the gentlemen's club that was once there. It was a very popular pre-prohibition cocktail, and is noted to have been one of the favorites among the club members. Although this classic cocktail was created in the late 1800s, the first known print of the recipe was in a cocktail book written by Paul E. Lowe "Drinks -- How to Serve Them."
Traditional clover club recipe
A classic clover club cocktail is made with raspberry syrup. You can make your own homemade fresh raspberry syrup for that bright fresh raspberry flavor. However, I prefer to make mine with grenadine syrup because I can find that easier in grocery stores. You can also make your own homemade grenadine, too!
