What Is a Batanga Cocktail?
The Batanga was created in the 1950s in the small town of Tequila, Jalisco, by the legendary Don Javier Delgado Corona, the beloved bartender of La Capilla—one of the oldest bars in Mexico and now a cocktail pilgrimage site for tequila lovers worldwide.
Ingredients
Tequila Blanco. This is the tequila that the traditional recipe calls for, and so it's the type of tequila I used!
Fresh Lime Juice. Fresh lime juice is a must!
Mexican Coca-Cola. Mexican Coke is made with real cane sugar, not high-fructose corn syrup
How to make a batanga
- Rub a lime wedge around the rim of the glass. Dip the glass into salt.
- Add fresh ice to the glass.
- Add your 2 oz tequila, ½ oz lime juice and top with Mexican coke.
- Give it a stir, garnish with a lime slice, and enjoy!
Substitutions and variations
Whether you prefer your cocktails with a heavy pinch of salt or a little less lime, the Batanga is easy to tweak to your personal taste.
- Charro Negro. Swap lime for a twist of bitters and make this darker, deeper version.
- Cuba Libre. Add rum instead of tequila to create a Cuban classic.
- Fruit Juice. Add a fruit juice like orange or grapefruit for a punchier, summery feel.
- Reposado Tequila. Use reposado tequila for a richer, oakier flavor.
