You will love this twist on a classic Moscow Mule.
It's quick and easy to make. 4 ingredients is all you need to make this fun twist on a traditional Moscow mule. Plus, if you love tequila like me, you'll absolutely love this version.
It's loaded with flavor. The tequila mixed with the orange flavor of the triple sec, the zesty flavor of the lime, and the crisp bubbly ginger beer, it's a simple yet flavor-packed and refreshing cocktail.
What are Mexican Mules made of?
Tequila. I always recommend using silver tequila, otherwise known as Blanco tequila, for a mixed tequila drink.
Lime Juice. You absolutely must use fresh lime juice when making mule recipes.
Triple Sec. Triple Sec is an orange liqueur and it adds just the slightest bit of sugary, citrusy sweetness that pairs perfectly with the zesty lime juice and spicy ginger beer.
Ginger Beer. Ginger beer is one of the key ingredients when making any and all mule drinks. It has such a delicious spicy ginger flavor.
Variations
Spice things up. Muddle fresh jalapeño with your lime juice, add spicy simple syrup, or you can use jalapeño-infused tequila!
Add a smoky tequila twist. Use a smoked Mezcal as opposed to regular tequila.
Sweeten things up. If ginger beer is to spicy and not sweet enough for your liking, you can use ginger ale.
How to make this tequila mule recipe.
- In a cocktail shaker filled with ice cubes, add in your tequila, fresh lime juice, and triple sec. Shake.
- Strain into a copper mug filled with ice, top with ginger beer.
- Garnish with a lime slice and enjoy!
Garnish ideas
- Fresh lime wedge
- Sprig of mint
- Jalapeno Slices
Do Moscow mules have to be served in a copper mug?
First, the copper acts as an insulator ensuring your drink stays cold for as long as possible. Second, some people say that copper enhances the flavor of the cocktail's ingredients. The copper begins to oxidize when the vodka is poured in, making the flavors a bit more elevated. So, yes, a fancy copper mug is necessary!
Best tequila for a delicious cocktail?
I always recommend using Blanco for margarita recipes, especially this tequila mule.
Blanco tequila
Blanco is not an aged tequila, like Reposado or Añejo, so it allows the flavors of your margarita to be the stars of the show.
Reposado tequila
You can absolutely use Reposado for margaritas, but you'll get that richer, aged taste. You'll notice that in these photos I used Reposado tequila, and it is delicious! Reposado tequila is aged for anywhere from two months to a year in oak barrels prior to being bottled. That's where the golden hue and the richer flavor come from.
Añejo tequila
Añejo is tequila that is aged for anywhere from one to three years and is truly made to be sipped on. So, I would recommend not making a margarita with Añejo tequila, and rather pour it over ice and enjoy it straight.
FAQs
What is mezcal vs tequila?
Mezcal is a category of spirits and tequila is a subset of that category. Similar to how whiskey is an umbrella category, and bourbon falls under that umbrella.
Do you use alcoholic ginger beer for Moscow Mules?
All ginger beer is non-alcoholic ginger beer, so no, you don't use alcoholic ginger beer.
Can you replace ginger beer with ginger ale in Moscow Mule?
Yes! But it will be far sweeter and less spicy.
What are the best brands of ginger beer?
I like Goslings or Fever Tree. You can find both at your local grocery store.
