What is a Texas margarita?
A Texas margarita has a splash of orange juice on top of all the ingredients of the traditional margarita recipe. It's perfect for happy hour or to pair with your favorite tacos.
Ingredients
Tequila. I recommend using Blanco, or silver tequila, versus gold tequila in this cocktail. That is my favorite tequila when making margaritas.
Fresh Orange Juice. I highly recommend using fresh orange juice! Especially if you are only making a few cocktails, it's so easy to get fresh orange juice with a citrus juicer! If you are making this into a big batch cocktail, I totally get not wanting to squeeze a bunch of oranges. If you have grocery stores that offer fresh squeezed orange juice in the produce section, I recommend using that.
Fresh Lime Juice. For the best flavor, you have to use fresh lime juice for any margarita recipe.
Light Agave Nectar. You need a little bit of sweetness added to get the best margarita, and light agave syrup offsets the zestiness of the lime while still enhancing that sweet orange juice flavor.
Orange Liqueur. I always have triple sec on my bar, but you can use Grand Marnier or Cointreau for this margarita recipe, too.

Substitutions and variations
Blood Orange Margarita. Swap out the orange juice for blood orange juice for not only a great cocktail, but the color will be stunning.
Spicy Texas Margarita. If you want some heat, I recommend adding a few slices of jalapeno and muddling them. You could also swap out the light agave for hot honey!
Best tequila for a Texas margarita
I always recommend using Blanco tequila, or silver tequila, for margarita recipes. Blanco is not an aged tequila, like Reposado or Añejo, so it allows the flavors of your margarita to be the stars of the show.
You can use Reposado for margaritas, but you'll get that richer, aged taste. You'll notice that in these photos I used Reposado tequila, and it is delicious! Reposado tequila is aged for anywhere from two months to a year in oak barrels before being bottled. That's where the golden hue and the richer flavor come from.
Añejo is tequila aged for anywhere from one to three years and is truly made to be sipped on. So, I would recommend not making a margarita with Añejo tequila, and rather pour it over ice and enjoying it straight.
What to serve with a Texas margarita
You can serve so many things with this Texas margarita! Air fryer chicken fajitas or baked chicken tacos are great options if you're looking for dinner recipes. If you're looking for appetizers or sides, you can opt for this avocado crema, roasted corn salsa, or the best blender salsa.
