Americano vs Cappuccino: What’s the Difference?

Ever wonder what the difference is between an Americano vs cappuccino? I'm here to break down all the key differences between these delicious espresso-based drinks.

This post may contain affiliate links, meaning I may earn a small commission when you click on the links and make a purchase. I will never recommend a product that I don’t support 100%.

The distinct differences between an Americano and a cappuccino are that an Americano is made with espresso and hot water whereas a cappuccino is made with equal parts espresso, steamed milk, and milk foam.

    What is an Americano?

An Americano is a single shot of espresso topped with hot water.

Americano vs Cappuccino: What’s the Difference?

    The history of the Americano

To learn the history of the Americano drink, we'll have to go all the way back to World War II. The United States had to ship tons of American coffee over to troops in Europe, but often times that wasn't enough for them. So, American soldiers took to going to local coffee shops, particularly in Italy, and they didn't like the taste of the straight espresso. To make it. more palatable, they added hot water to their espresso to dilute the bitter taste, and thus the Americano coffee was born.

What is the difference between regular coffee and Americano?

An Americano is the combination of hot water and espresso whereas regular coffee is simply just brewed coffee.

What is an Americano with milk called?

Don't like black coffee? Me either. If you want an Americano with milk, you can order or make an Americano with milk or a White Americano.

    What is a cappuccino?

A cappuccino is 1-2 shots of espresso, steamed milk, and a layer of foamed milk on top.

Americano vs Cappuccino: What’s the Difference?

Is a cappuccino stronger than coffee?

Nope! It has roughly the same amount of caffeine, but because it is made with espresso shots, the main difference is the taste. Cappuccinos will taste stronger than drip coffee or brewed coffee.

    Wet cappuccino vs dry cappuccino

A wet cappuccino has more steamed milk and less foam. A dry cappuccino is less steamed milk and more foam. A super wet cappuccino is a latte and a bone dry cappuccino is just a foam pillow and espresso, so essentially a macchiato.

Other espresso drinks, what's the difference between them all?

Aside from an Americano and cappuccino, there are a handful of other espresso-based drinks. A lot of the key differences between these popular drinks is the ratio of what you put on top of the espresso. Here's the full breakdown of different types of coffee drinks.

Lattes. Unlike the traditional cappuccino, lattes double the steamed milk and forgo the foam on top. Lattes will typically have a sweet taste due to the different flavors added in like hazelnut or vanilla.

Mocha. Mocha is a cappuccino but with the addition of chocolate.

Latte Macchiato. A latte macchiato is equal parts espresso and milk foam.

Flat White. A flat white is a combination of steamed milk and espresso.

Cafe au Lait. This is coffee with hot milk added. White coffee is coffee with cold milk added.

    All about espresso

To get the perfect cappuccino, Americano, latte, or whatever type of espresso drink you prefer, you need to start with a strong foundation which means properly brewing yourself a shot, or two, of espresso. There aren't espresso coffee beans. Espresso is made or can be made, with the same coffee beans that make regular drip coffee. However what makes espresso "espresso" is the brewing method.

Drip coffee is made by pouring hot water over loosely packed coffee grounds and letting that slowly work its way through the grounds and thus your cup of coffee is created. Espresso is made by forcing almost boiling water through finely-ground coffee beans at high pressure.

To really get that rich flavor, you want to use dark roast coffee for making espresso. Not only will it give you that strong coffee taste, but it also gives you that beautiful caramel-colored foam on top. You can always make espresso with whatever roast you prefer, but that's what the coffee experts recommend.

If you're looking to make your espresso, you can buy yourself a traditional espresso machine (this one comes with a steam wand for milk), a stovetop espresso maker, or a pod machine like a Nespresso. I have had both an espresso machine and a pod machine and I loved both! I currently use a pod machine and purchase these pods from Amazon and they are my favorite.

Americano vs Cappuccino: What’s the Difference?

What is the difference between an Americano, cappuccino, and latte?

Americano vs. Cappuccino vs. Latte, the only difference here is truly personal preference. These are all very popular coffee drinks and it just depends on how you like your cup of coffee!

Americano. Espresso + Hot Water. This is a similar drink to black coffee. If you prefer your coffee with no milk, give an Americano a try!

Cappuccino. Espresso + Steamed Milk + Foam.

Latte. Espresso + Double Steamed Milk + Dash of Foam

Americano vs Cappuccino: get to know all the differences

Let's break down the similarities and differences between Americano vs cappuccino for all you coffee lovers out there.

Taste. Because an Americano is basically black coffee, it will be a bit more bitter and a cappuccino will be creamier and sweeter.

Espresso. Both of these drinks typically call for a double shot of espresso. You can get a single-shot cappuccino, but most are made with 2 shots of espresso.

Milk vs. Water. This is the biggest difference. Americanos have a 1:1 ratio of espresso to water with no milk. You can absolutely add hot milk for a creamier taste, but if you order an Americano you will not get any milk in there. Cappuccinos have espresso, steamed milk, and a top of foamed milk. There is no hot water in this coffee beverage, but the milk adds a creamy texture. When ordering this at a coffee shop, you can request any type of milk you prefer.

Caffeine. Because they are made with the same amount of espresso, the caffeine content is the same.

Calories. I am not a calorie counter, but I know some people like to be conscious of that! Because an Americano is just water and espresso, there are basically no calories. A cappuccino's calories depend on the milk you use. For example, if you use whole milk, there's about 75 calories.

Americano vs Cappuccino: What’s the Difference?

    Is americano or cappuccino stronger?

Since they both have or can have, the same amount of espresso, they are equal in terms of caffeine content. 1 oz. of espresso has about 64 mg of caffeine. If you're looking for high caffeine content, I recommend a double espresso. If you're looking for less caffeine, 1 shot of espresso should do. For reference, 2 ounces of espresso can range from 60-100 milligrams of caffeine whereas a 12-ounce drip coffee can range from 95-180 milligrams of caffeine.

Talking taste, however, the strength of an Americano vs. cappuccino heavily relies on the amount of milk or water in it. If you want less milk or water, you'll of course have a really rich taste. If you like the taste of coffee, you'll love a good, strong espresso drink.

Which has more milk americano or cappuccino?

A cappuccino. An Americano has no milk. A cappuccino is espresso, steamed milk, and a layer of milk foam.

Which is better an Americano or a cappuccino?

Different drinks for different tastes! I personally like my coffee with milk or creamer, so I would order a cappuccino at my local coffee shop. However, both are a great option, especially if you like the strong taste of coffee.
