What is Caprese salad?

Caprese salad, or Insalata Caprese, is the traditional salad of the island of Capri, Italy. A traditional caprese salad combines fresh mozzarella cheese, basil, ripe tomatoes, good olive oil, and flaky sea salt. It's so refreshing, and one of my favorite appetizers or side salads.

Ingredients

– 4 cups tomatoes – ½ cup fresh basil – 1 tbsp olive oil – 1 tsp salt – ½ tsp black pepper – 1 ball burrata – 1 tsp balsamic reduction

How to make burrata caprese

1. Slice your tomatoes. I used grape tomatoes and sliced them into quarters. I find the smaller pieces easier to eat. Add them into a bowl. 2. Add a generous drizzle of olive oil and a teaspoon salt. If you're using cherry or grape tomatoes, give it a stir. 3. Add your sliced, fresh basil. 4. Top with your ball of burrata, slice the burrata and enjoy!

Variations and substitutions

There are so many fun and delicious variations to this burrata salad. Here are a few you can try! Fresh Ripe Peaches. You can put tomato bits along with delicious juicy tomatoes, or you can completely sub out the tomatoes and make it entirely peaches. Strawberries. These are another great fruity addition to add, especially to make this the ultimate summer salad. Mozzarella Balls. If you want to make this extra cheese and delicious, add some mozzarella balls or pearls. Pesto. This is a super simple twist, just add a drizzle of pesto over the top for an extra basil flavor. Red Onion. If you want a pungent addition, try adding some thinly sliced red onion. Garlic. You can use fresh garlic or garlic powder. Personally, I love adding garlic and onion to my caprese salad recipes.
